The Art of Rene Joseph

Mural Project:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Rene' Joseph studied with Second Generation Abstract Expressionist painter Mary Abbott.

Professional contact with a link to the New York School gave Joseph insight into what was behind the movement.

Understanding that the WPA employed Abstract painters in mural work at the beginning of their careers, Rene' Joseph felt the importance of doing a large public painting.

The grant gave the artist the chance to organize the neighborhood by conducting workshops for the downtown mural.

The artist was responsible for all aspects of planning, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, news releases, workshops, design, and execution of the mural project while working at a job to support living expenses.

"The true value of a grant is that allows an artist to do something that would otherwise be impossible without the seed money and official backing."      --Rene' Joseph
