The Art of Rene Joseph

Mural Project:

THE BARE FACTS OF PREPARING A WALL

Wanting to rid the neighborhood of a notoriously violent bar next to their community garden, the inner city residents of Elliot Park lobbied and won to replace the business with a low-income housing complex.   Photo of bare lot and blank wall. Enclosed in an area in-between the new building and a badly peeling wall of an older building, financially strapped gardeners faced a bleak landscape.

Artist Rene' Joseph saw the wall as an opportunity to paint.

Workers painting wall white. Paint splattered workers. Sweaty but happy workers.
"We're Not Ready Till We Go Over This Wall Inch By Inch!" "Nobody Could Tell If We Had A Paint Fight..." "We Got It Done--NOW We Can Really Get To Work."
